Berea man Gary Fury sentenced in hit-skip crash involving off-duty police officer

CLEVELAND - A Berea man was sentenced to spend more than 2 years in prison in connection to a hit-skip crash that left an off-duty police officer from Michigan seriously injured.

Gary Fury, 54, was sentenced by a judge to spend the next 2-and-a-half years behind bars for leaving the scene of a wreck and aggravated vehicular assault.

Police said Robert Charles Bielak was struck on Sept. 4 on I-71 south near the Ridge Road overpass after he pulled his motorcycle over to the side of the road to check a map.

Police said Fury continued on without stopping after striking him.

Bielak was in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center, according to the hospital. Doctors had to amputate his left leg from the knee down, according to his family.

Bialek is a police officer in Pinckney, Michigan.
