Army Spc. Angel Lopez of Parma killed in enemy attack in Afghanistan

PARMA, Ohio - A solider from Parma was killed during an attack in Afghanistan last week.

The Department of Defense said 27-year-old Spc. Angel L. Lopez died on Oct. 5 in the Zabul province when his unit was attacked by a group of enemy forces.

He began his military service in Jan. 2012 and arrived to Fort Knox in July 2012. This was Lopez's first deployment.

Lopez was a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to the 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Fort Knox.

His awards and decorations included Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Combat Star, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, NATO medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Fort Knox is planning a Duke remembrance ceremony to honor Lopez. A memorial service was held Tuesday in Afghanistan.
