STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - Six skaters from Northeast Ohio are heading on the U.S. Figure Skating Championship after the Midwestern Sectional Championship wrapped up at Ice Land USA in Strongsville on Monday.
For the third straight year, local ice dancing teams from the Pavilion Skating Club in Cleveland Heights outshined their competition and will advance to nationals.
Hannah Rosinski and Jacob Jaffe took home the bronze in the Junior Ice Dance division. Jaffe's decision to defer his enrollment in classes at Brown University for one year in order to try to make it to the national championships again proved to work in his favor. Rosinski and Jaffe are making their second trip to nationals together even though this is just their second season competing together as a team.
Jaffe's younger brother, Micah, was also successful in his bid to make it to the national championships. Micah and partner Kimberly Berkovich won the bronze in the Novice Ice Dance division competing against 4 other teams. Berkovich and Jaffe are former medalists in the Juvenile and Intermediate divisions and also represent the Pavilion Skating Club of Cleveland Heights.
Another Pavilion Skating Club member, Jacob Schedl, placed third in the Intermediate Ice Dance division with partner Caroline Leadmon and will head to the national championship.
Troy Tomasello, who represents the Winterhurst Figure Skating Club in Lakewood, won the silver medal for the second year in a row in the Junior Men's division. This will be Tomasello's third trip to U.S. Figure Skating Championship.
Other Cleveland area skaters competing at the sectional championship include Chelsea Christopher and Caitlin Nemastil, both of the Winterhurst Figure Skating Club in Lakewood. Christopher placed 7th in the Senior Ladies event, improving upon her 11th place finish in the same event last year. Nemastil placed 6th in the Junior Ladies Division and will be a second alternate to the national championship.
The Midwestern Sectional Championship was hosted by the Greater Cleveland Council of Figure Skating Clubs. To read more about figure skating in Northeast Ohio, visit: clevelandskating.com.
