A man is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Geneva Township Friday just before 8 p.m. police said.

The accident happened on US 20 when a Jeep Cherokee driven by 60-year-old Thomas Laughlin of Ashtabula struck and killed 56-year-old Richard Nelson of Painesville, police said.

Authorities said Laughlin was traveling eastbound when Nelson walked into the path of the Jeep Cherokee; Nelson was struck by the vehicle and was killed on impact.  Police said Nelson was not wearing any reflective gear during the time of the accident.

Laughlin was uninjured in the crash and was wearing his safety belt, police said.

Officials said alcohol does appear to be a factor for the pedestrian and the crash remains under investigation.
