ORWELL, Ohio - A 27-year-old woman was killed in a house explosion in Orwell that happened around 6:45 p.m., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Orwell Fire Department Chief Joe Albergo said the explosion happened at 4033 Montgomery Road.
A man was transported by life flight to MetroHealth Medical Center for second- and third-degree burns.
Officials on-scene say that when the man inside attempted to light in a cigarette in the upstairs of the home, the entire house exploded.
The woman was reportedly in the downstairs kitchen at the time of the explosion, which residents heard as far as five miles away.
Neighbors say they have smelled natural gas in the area around the house for a few days now but investigators haven’t said what caused the explosion.
