Investigators back on scene of Orwell house explosion Thursday, focusing on water well for answers

ORWELL, Ohio - Investigators are focusing on a water well after a deadly house explosion in Ashtabula County from Wednesday evening.

The house exploded around 6:45 p.m. killing 27-year-old Malerie Nick.

Investigators were back at the house in Orwell Thursday.

They're focusing on whether a water well was properly ventilated to get rid of a build up of natural gas.

Shallow shale natural gas is found organically in the ground around parts of rural Ashtabula County and water wells must be ventilated, officials said.

Investigators believe this is an isolated incident involving only the house that exploded and don't believe any gas wells were leaking in the surrounding area.

Jaimes Ortis, suffering from second and third degree burns, is listed in critical condition at Metro Health Medical Center.
