ASHTABULA, Ohio - Friends gathered Monday night to remember a mother and daughter murdered at their home in Ashtabula.
Police in Ashtabula are investigating the double murder after the mother was found shot to death and her daughter beaten to death inside a home on Kain Avenue near Route 20.
Rich Mongell, chief investigator for the Ashtabula County Coroner's Office, said it's not clear how long the bodies were there.
But the family of Amparo "Patty" Torres, 40, and Hilda Garcia, 20, believe their loved ones were murdered sometime this weekend.
"I really can't tell you why because these are the two most loving people you will ever meet," one relative said.
Garcia's boyfriend called the family after he hadn't heard from his girlfriend in a few days. When the family went to the house, they found Torres's husband asleep on the couch with a gun. Family members told NewsChannel5 they grabbed the gun and got the man into a position so he couldn't hurt anyone.
"In the first room, we found Amparo dead in her bed. It looked like she has been beaten. Then, we went to Hilda's room to see if she was in there and we found her in bed. There was a lot of blood everywhere," said the family member, who didn't want to be identified.
Both women were found naked -- Torres with a gunshot would to the back of her head and Garcia appeared to have been beaten to death.
Police have confirmed the family's story, but have not named the husband as a suspect at this time. Meanwhile, the family believes the husband is the cold-blooded killer.
"I hope you rot in hell. I don't believe we should hate anybody, but when you walk in and you see two people like this and that he made them suffer, who knows what else he has done to them."
At a vigil at Mother of Sorrows Church, friends lit candles and said prayers. "We couldn't believe it and I still can't believe it," Diana Palomino said.
Palomino said Hilda was like a sister to her. "Our prayers go out for her and her mom. She's always going to be in my heart," she said.
Autopsies will be done on Tuesday.
