A young lady did not let any physical limitations get in her way of helping to make improvements to her local YMCA.
Katie Petro, 13, has been diagnosed with brittle bone disease. Last year, she helped raise money with her swim team at the Ashtabula County YMCA for a chair lift for the pool.
Her own disease is now her motivation to transform the entire facility, eventually making it all handicap accessible.
Petro learned to swim at the Y, and this is her sixth year on the YMCA swim team.
Sunday, she swam 10,500 laps to raise money for a walkway for the YMCA pool.
"I know how it feels not being able to do something because of a disability," Katie said in a news release. "I don't want others to experience that feeling, so I will do anything I can to make the Y more handicap accessible."
Zach Manuel, Program Director at the Ashtabula YMCA, admires Petro's dedication to the Y.
"It's very inspiring to see the passion for the Y that Katie demonstrates,' he said.
