MRSA outbreak attacks Kenston youth football team

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio - Between six and 11 cases of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have been reported within the Kenston Community Education Varsity White football team, comprised of fifth and sixth graders.

According to Kenston Community Education Director Jennifer Holzheimer, the school district has contacted the Geauga County Health Department, sent letters to parents , and began sterilization efforts.

As a precautionary measure, the school's turf field, locker rooms, and common football equipment have been disinfected and cleaned.

Students currently being treated for MRSA will not be allowed to play without clearance from a physician.

More than 170 students participate in the schools sports program, 25 of which are on the Varsity White football team.

To help stop any further spread of MRSA, Kenston Community Education staff are encouraging parents and students to practice good hygiene and wipe down any shared equipment before and after use.
