CLEVELAND - A serial rapist was sentenced Wednesday to at least 30 years in prison after DNA evidence was obtained from rape kits that sat untested for 20 years.
Delbert Buckwald, 48, was sentenced to a minimum of 10-25 years to be served consecutively in connection with three West Side Cleveland rapes in 1993 and 1994.
Rape kits contain DNA evidence obtained from victims of sexual assaults, but an exclusive 5 On Your Side investigation last February revealed how thousands of rape kits remained untested sitting on police department shelves across Ohio.
In an interview last February, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine promised his office would provide resources to local police departments who could send their untested rape kits to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for testing.
In addition, the cold case unit at the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office has made significant progress in investigating decades old rape cases that have lead to indictments and prison for rapists.
As a result, DNA evidence in Delbert's case is among 4,000 rape kits Cleveland is submitting for testing.
