Ohio auditors uncover billing issues

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio - A Cleveland Heights ambulette company owes more than a million dollars in improper Medicaid billing, according to an audit performed by the Ohio Auditor of State.

Greathouse Medical Transport, LLC, operates a fleet of ambulettes and auditors found a total of $1,013,028.24 was billed for Medicaid services that did not have proper documentation.

Auditors had to "go digging into a basement for records" to complete the audit.

Auditors found 141 instances where no certificate of medical necessity was included and another 20 instances where the document was not valid.

Auditors also found 80 transports billed for mileage that exceeded the documented mileage along with 374 canceled trips that did not have proper documentation.

In addition, 11 ambulette drivers were not eligible to transport patients.

The audit covered years 2008 through 2010 and results have been forwarded to Ohio Medicaid officials for review and possible collection.
