Field High School was closed on Wednesday due to a gastrointestinal illness that has caused several students to call out sick.

According to administrators, a significant number of Field High School students have been absent this week due to the illness.

Dave Heflinger, superintendent of Field Local Schools, said 30 percent of kids stayed home on Tuesday.

"It needed to be done for the benefit of the students," Heflinger said.

Custodians and teacher cleaned and disinfected classrooms and bus drivers wiped down their vehicles.

All high school extracurricular activities were also canceled Wednesday.

This was the first calamity day for the district. Field Local Schools used nine "snow days" last year,.

"It's certainly nice to have space available. It has been a refreshing year, but I'm aware that winter isn't over yet," Heflinger added.

The Maplewood Career Center bus shuttle ran as scheduled. Other schools in the district remained open because those were not experiencing the same illness problem.

The high school will reopen on Thursday. However, students will have excused absences if parents choose to keep them home the rest of the week.
