CLEVELAND - A groundbreaking ceremony is planned on Wednesday for a new Emergency Operations Center for the Perry Nuclear Power Plant.
The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at 7755 Auburn Rd., Painesville.
Representatives from Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties will join officials from FirstEnergy for the groundbreaking event. Once built, this new 12,000 square-foot center will provide overall management of maintaining public health and safety during the event of an emergency at the plant by using state-of-the-art equipment to monitor environmental conditions and communicate with state and local emergency representatives.
FirstEnergy also plans to use the facility also for quarterly training drills and biannual emergency exercises evaluated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Construction is expected to be completed in January 2012.
Also on Wednesday, the public is invited to a meeting to discuss safety and performance at Ohio's Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant.
The meeting, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Davis-Besse Energy Education Center, 5501 North State Route 2, Oak Harbor will be presented by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission who will be prepared to discuss their assessment of the safety performance at Davis-Besse for the past year. The NRC staff will also discuss their range of activities and will take questions or comments from the public.
"The NRC continually reviews the performance of the Davis-Besse facility and the nation's other commercial nuclear power facilities," said NRC Region III Administrator Mark Satorius in a press release. "This meeting allows us to discuss our annual assessment of safety performance with members of the local community. The goal of this meeting is to explain how the NRC works to protect people and the environment and to answer questions from residents about nuclear regulation."
