A Cleveland woman has been charged with breaking the neck of an 8-week-old puppy during a domestic dispute on Sept. 30.
Deanna Caraballo picked up the puppy and slammed it to the ground, according to police reports. The force of the impact broke the dog's neck, killing it.
Caraballo was originally charged with cruelty to companion animals, a fifth-degree felony, in Cleveland Municipal Court, according to court documents. Caraballo has since been bound to a grand jury due to the nature of her charges.
A law passed on Sept. 13, dubbed Goddard's Law, makes first time animal cruelty in Ohio a felony offense. The act "prohibits a person from knowingly causing serious physical harm to a companion animal and specifies that a violation ... is a fifth degree felony," according to legal documents.
Caraballow is set to be arraigned in court later this week.
