Westlake man pleads guilty to running over, killing father in 2004

CLEVELAND - A man who was found incompetent to stand trial for allegedly running over and killing his father at their Westlake home in 2004 has pleaded guilty to the charges.

Daniel Jung was originally charged with murder in the July 2004 incident, but the judge sent him to a Dayton psychiatric hospital for at least a one-year stay.

On Monday, Cuyahoga County court records showed two doctors found Jung to be competent on June 27, 2011. While in court this week, Jung retracted his original not guilty pleas to involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault charges – and pleaded guilty to these two charges.

Prosecutors said Jung – who was 22 years old and attended Stanford University at the time -- ran over his father, 68-year-old Yong Jung, and his mother, 61-year-old Jemma Jung, after having an argument over use of the family car.

Mr. and Mrs. Jung were taken to the hospital, but Mr. Jung later died. Mrs. Jung survived the incident.

Daniel Jung took off in the vehicle and a nationwide manhunt was called for him. He turned himself in to police in Toledo two days later.

Jung is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 9, 2011 at 12 p.m.
