Two hurt in hit-skip at East 9th and St. Clair; Witnesses chase after car for description

CLEVELAND - Two people were injured during a hit-and-run crash near the Galleria on Monday.

Just before noon, a 2011 Kia hit another car at the intersection of East 9th Street and St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland police said. The white Kia then drove onto the sidewalk and hit two pedestrians, police and witnesses said.

The victims are Scripps employees, Mike Brookbank and Tom Genovese of "The List." Both were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center.

"We need an ambulance please two people. I'm at East 9th Street downtown at St. Clair. A car just run them over," a man told 911 dispatchers. "I can't tell. I'm not a doctor, but they're on the floor."

Genovese said the SUV ran over his foot and side-swiped him. He probably has a broken arm, possibly caused by the driver's side mirror.

"I'm looking out the window. I heard it. There's a police officer there with them. He's on his phone. He might be calling for help. I heard it. The car went up onto the sidewalk and hit them," a woman told a 911 dispatcher from a nearby building.

Two witnesses chased after the vehicle and were able to get a good description of the SUV. Police said the car then took off onto Interstate 90 eastbound.

The incident is under investigation by the Cleveland Division of Police Hit Skip Unit.
