The Cleveland Teachers Union and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District have reached a tentative agreement for a collective bargaining agreement, according to information released by both groups on Tuesday.

The Cleveland Teachers Union and CMSD said after 21 hours of bargaining, the district and union reached an agreement at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

On Aug. 16, the Cleveland Teachers Union declared it would go on strike Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. over contract negotiations.

CMSD and the teachers union have been in negotiations since November 2015.

Meg Ryan with the Cleveland Teachers Union said the next step for her group is to meet with the executive board and then general membership for a vote. The CMSD Board will do the same.

According to CMSD, if members of the union and school board can finalize the contract, the new deal would go into effect immediately.

The union said educators will be sent copies of the tentative agreement and voting will be held in schools.
