Case medical student Gloria Tavera was one of at least 20 volunteers known as Rust Belt Medics or street medics.

The group will provide first aid to any demonstrators who might get injured or dehydrated during Republican National Convention protests, if EMTs can’t immediately get through the crowds to help.

Tavera said street medics started during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Volunteers who don’t have medical back grounds must get 20 hours of training starting July 8 at the Case School of Medicine.

"We're there to get to the people as  quickly as possible, provide first aid, and liaise with paramedics and other medical professionals," Tavera said.
