CLEVELAND - The state has been asked to take over a Cleveland-area investigation of road paving contractors.
The Cuyahoga County prosecutor has asked the Ohio auditor to handle the five-year investigation into paving contracts in Solon and Valley View. Prosecutor Tim McGinty didn't detail the reason for the switch.
Spokeswoman Carrie Bartunek with the state auditor's office says such a request isn't unusual. She tells The Plain Dealer the auditor's office has expertise in financial cases.
The investigation began in 2007 with a complaint about shoddy road paving work in Solon, and the probe expanded to Valley View.
Two years ago, then-state Auditor Mary Taylor ruled that $2.5 million had been stolen from the suburban communities by contractors. Restitution claims have been stalled by related criminal cases.
