CLEVELAND - An arrest was made in an East Cleveland murder after a brief standoff on Friday.
East Cleveland Police Chief Ralph Spotts said the 35-year-old man surrendered at his mother's house on Chickasaw Avenue, near East 197th Street. The suspect's name and mugshot were released by police, but it is NewsChannel5 policy not to name him until charges are filed.
The man was wanted in connection with the body found in a garage Friday morning at Shaw and Hayden avenues, Spotts said. Police were called when residents noticed a strong, foul odor.
The remains were discovered wrapped in a bag, which was next to a car the suspect had been driving, Spotts said.
East Cleveland called Cleveland police to help take the suspect into custody.
East Cleveland City Councilman Mansell Baker released the following statement about the murder:
"It is with great sadness that the Council members of East Cleveland, once again, are made aware of the senseless taking of a precious human life in our City. We have every confidence that our Police Department will handle this tragedy with the utmost respect for the families of the individuals involved and come to a quick resolution for the sake of the families. We, the members of Council, extend our condolences to their families at this time."
