CLEVELAND - Cuyahoga County Prosecutors ruled Thursday that the Cleveland police officer involved in a deadly shooting case from March 2012 acted lawfully.
Patrolman Rodgers Jones shot and killed 20-year-old Kenneth Smith March 10, 2012 near East 9th Street and Prospect Avenue.
Jones, who was off-duty at the time, witnessed a fight in a nearby parking lot. When he saw someone fire a handgun and flee the scene, he followed the car and called for backup.
Officers were able to stop the car at East 9th St. and Prospect Ave.
Jones then ordered Smith to exit the vehicle, Smith refused and reached for a handgun. Jones then shot Smith in the head.
Officer Jones was put on administrative leave from the incident.
An administrative review will be conducted and presented to Chief of Police Calvin Williams. Jones is currently on restricted duty status.
