A Grand River police officer who was working as a security guard Thursday morning on Cleveland's east side fired shots after he was dragged by a car.

The security guard was trying to stop a man and a woman who allegedly stole meat from Dave's Supermarket.

According to Cleveland police, the incident happened at the market at East 40th Street and Quincy Avenue around 10 a.m.

The manager chased the suspects out and when the security guard tried to intervene, the suspects dragged the guard with their van, police said.

Police report that the guard fired approximately four rounds while being dragged.

"I just heard a couple shots and came out here and police man was running out in the street shooting at somebody," said Gordon Mays, who lives down the street and heard the shooting.

Police don't believe anyone was hit by the bullets.

The Grand River Police Chief Barry Dodd identified the security guard as Tim Holt. He has been working part-time for the police department for more than 12 years.

Holt is an experienced firearms instructor and member of the Buckeye Firearms association.

As of Thursday night, Holt was in "good condition" according to MetroHealth.

Suspects are described as a black man and woman driving a dark blue van, possibly a Kia Sedona.

Police had made no arrests of as Thursday night.

Newsnet5.com requested security camera footage of the incident but Dave's Market corporate offices did not respond to the inquiry or a request for comment.

Chief Dodd said the department was concerned for Holt's well being but because he was off duty at the time, the investigation is being handled by Cleveland police.
