New life for the Galleria with Life@Erieview in downtown Cleveland

Business, food and retail reinvented

The Galleria at East 9 th Street and St. Clair Avenue used to be an 80s-style urban mall. But difficult economic times and the development of other downtown eating and shopping spots led to its decline.

Slowly and quietly over the past few years, Minshall Stewart Properties, LLC is reinventing the mall. It's calling the new concept in urban neighborhood development, Life@Erieview.

The idea is to better serve people who work in the area and live downtown.

Dollar Bank now occupies a sizable two-story space in the atrium and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association has made its home there.

The Erieview Tower and Galleria location is one that Cuyahoga County is considering for its headquarters, with executive offices in the tower and public business taking place in the atrium.

One of Cleveland's oldest institutions has decided Life@Erieview is also for them. The YMCA will bring its headquarters and facilities to the Galleria.

Winks, the third variation of the Winking Lizard eatery, has recently opened in the atrium. Its emphasis, for tourists and Clevelanders alike, is on serving some of the best local food and drink the Cleveland area has to offer.

Owner John Lane wants their presence in the Galleria to help advance the cause of Life@Erieview.

"We're hoping to help spur this and bring it back when it was in its real happy days, when there was more retail down here and people looked at it as even a destination," Lane said.
