Jennifer Zacarias' killer sentenced to life in prison, chance for parole after 30 years

CLEVELAND - Anthony Ruiz, the man convicted of killing 16-year-old Jennifer Zacarias outside her home in February, was sentenced Thursday to serve life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.

Ruiz, 16, of Cleveland, was charged with aggravated murder, assault, robbery and tampering with evidence in connection with the case.

Zacarias was gunned down in the backyard of her W.102nd Street home just after midnight on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office says Zacarias was shot multiple times, suffering gunshot wounds to her head, neck and extremities.

Ruiz was arrested a few hours later.

The teen's father heard gunshots and ran upstairs to check on his teen daughter. She was nowhere to be found so he ran outside, locating her body in the their backyard.

Police said Zacarias and the suspect knew each other.

Zacarias' family told NewsChannel5 they weren't sure of the extent of the teens' relationship.

She was a junior at John Marshall High School.
