The Great Lakes Science Center will be taking down its iconic dome movie theater in preparation for a major remodel.

The Science Center said that their Cleveland Clinic Foundation OMNIMAX Theater will shut down after the last movie of the day on September 5, and will remain closed through mid-October when it will reopen as the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Dome Theater.

The theater will feature the world's first giant dome cinema laser system. The new three-projector, laser-illuminated projection system will replace the current system that has been in place since the Science Center opened in 1996.

The Center will show documentary films that will immerse audience members in "breathtaking new perspectives on our world and future," Science Center CEO Dr. Kirsten Ellenbogen said.

The renovation comes after a $1.8 million capital campaign to finance the digital conversion and theater remodel. The campaign was supported by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, The Fred A. Lennon Charitable Trust, The Lubrizol Foundation, The Cliffs Foundation, PNC Foundation and other corporations and foundations.
