Great Lakes Brewing Company leads to Ohio City success 25 years down the road

CLEVELAND - Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood isn't just alive and well, it's thriving.

"It's a great neighborhood, very cool with a great vibe. Great food and it celebrates the arts," said Cleveland State student Carrie Ryan, while strumming her guitar in Market Square across from the historic West Side Market Friday.

Thirty-seven new businesses have opened in Ohio City in the last two years. More are under construction.

But this revival started with a great idea 25 years ago. The Great Lakes Brewing Company is celebrating its silver anniversary and many credit the popular craft brewery with breathing new life into the area.

One of the newest hits is Town Hall on West 25th Street. Town Hall specialties include the Thai chicken salad bowl and house ginger ale. It also carries Mitchell's Ice Cream, which is moving its headquarters to Ohio City.

Town Hall is what Ohio City is all about because they also serve many items from other local shops like Colossal Cupcakes and Rising Star Coffee.

"The fact that we are all uniting to support one another is really what makes Ohio City and Cleveland special," said Town Hall employee Cassia Curtis.

"I've been working downtown for 20 years and the growth I've seen from downtown to Ohio City has been pretty amazing. It's so good to see this happening," said Town Hall owner Fabio Salerno.

And to think it all started with Great Lakes Brewing Company 25 years ago.
