Giovonni Wilson, 26, was shot in the leg and buttocks by his girlfriend after she saw him visiting with his wife and children, according to Cleveland police.

Police said the shooting occurred on Monday around 11:30 p.m. in the 10000 block of Elwell Avenue.

Officers responded to MetroHealth Medical Center at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday for a man shot. When they spoke with Wilson, he said he was outside of his home speaking with his wife who was dropping off their 5-year-old daughter with him for visitation. He told police he and his wife were separated.

Wilson said at the time, his 38-year-old girlfriend arrived and became angry when she saw his wife was there. She allegedly punched Wilson in the head and then walked to her car to get a small pistol, with which she shot Wilson. Wilson told police he was able to take the gun away from the woman and threw it in the bushes. The girlfriend then drove away.

Wilson said after the incident, he went inside his home and bandaged his wound. Family members later convinced him to go to the hospital and report the incident to police. Wilson said he had a traffic warrant out and was hesitant to make the report at first.

Police learned aside from the 5-year-old, Wilson's wife's 9-year-old and 10-year-old boys were also at the scene when the incident occurred. No one other than Wilson was injured.
