CLEVELAND - The Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office says the near west side - where the former homes of murder suspect Elias Acevedo and convicted rapist and kidnapper Ariel Castro – is a hot bed for sex offenders.
"Cuyahoga County, because of the size of our county and the nature of our county, being very urban, we do have the highest number of sex offenders in the state of Ohio," said detective Katie Oleksiak of the Sheriff's Office.
Oleksiak said there are 3,000 sex offenders who live in Cuyahoga County. The 44113 zip code, where Acevedo and Castro once resided, is one of the top three Cleveland zip codes for sex offenders. Public records indicate there are 52 of them total.
Within a two-mile radius of Castro's former Seymour Avenue home, public records show there are 238 sex offenders.
"When we moved here, it was a real nice neighborhood," said a near west side resident who didn't want to give her name. "But now it seems like it's gone down to the dogs."
The woman has lived on the near west side for the past 40 years. Her son is a sex offender, convicted of sexual battery. They live together.
When the economy tanked five years ago, the woman said her neighborhood did too.
"There is crime," she said. "There are people breaking into people's homes."
"What can I do?" asked Jennifer Reyes, a near west side resident. "He's going to snatch my kid. He's going to go inside my house. I'm scared that somebody might just go inside my house."
Reyes didn't realize she lived three doors away from a convicted rapist until NewsChannel5 informed her Tuesday. She was disgusted and scared to hear the news.
The Sheriff's Office said zip codes 44102 and 44105 also have high numbers of sex offenders. 44102 is Cleveland's west side that encompasses the Detroit Shoreway area north of highway 71. Public records indicate there are 257 sex offenders who live there. Zip code 44105, the Union Avenue and East 93 rd area, is home to 223 sex offenders.
