Kayaker sought by Coast Guard on Lake Erie calls to say 'I'm safe'

CLEVELAND - Missing Lake Erie kayaker reported safe after seeing reports on the news of a search.

According to the United States Coast Guard they received a call from a person stating they were safe after seeing reports that a search was happening.

The Coast Guard said the person was kayaking and another swimming when storms rolled into the area. The kayak did overturn but both people reported they made it to shore and went on their way.

The Coast Guard had sent search crews into Lake Erie for a kayaker or kayakers who may have fallen from their canoe, around 7 p.m. after they received a call from someone who was watching them lost sight of them during the storm.

A Coast Guard boat began searching the area from the break wall to Lakewood while their helicopter was brought in from Detroit.

In addition Cleveland Police and Metropark rangers searched the rocky beaches out to West 117th Street to see if the kayakers had made their way to shore on their own but their were no signs of the people or their kayak.
