A Cleveland police sergeant was injured and a driver was arrested after a crash early Friday morning.

The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. in the intersection of East 140th Street and St. Clair Avenue.

The officer was conducting routine supervisory duties when a 2001 Dodge Caravan careened across the intersection and hit the front driver-side corner of the cruiser injuring the officer, according to police reports.

The driver of the minivan reportedly had no injuries, but the officer had to be transported to St. Vincent Charity Hospital for his injuries. Police say he was treated and released.

Police say the driver of the minivan is suspected of driving while impaired. A field sobriety test indicated that he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.

He was arrested and booked into a Cleveland jail.

The driver had a record three pages long, including charges of driving under suspension, operating a vehicle while under the influence and open container violations.

The intersection was closed for about two hours while police worked to reconstruct the crash and clean up the scene.
