Cleveland recreation center unveils plans for environmental-friendly outdoor design

CLEVELAND - The Michael J. Zone Recreation Center on Lorain Ave. in Cleveland broke ground on an innovative project Saturday that will transform the grounds of the center into a national model for ecological urban design.

The project will integrate environmental stewardship into a state-of-the-art upgrade of the outdoor facilities at the center. The $3 million dollar project will include a number of upgrades, including onsite treatment of storm water, integration of solar power generation for outdoor concession stand and restrooms, a splash park, soccer field, baseball diamond and multipurpose trail.

The environmental features will serve as an educational tool for area schools and communities to learn about sustainability and the environment.

The Michael J. Zone Recreation Center Sustainable Greenspace project is a collaborative effort between the City of Cleveland, Councilman Matt Zone, ParkWorks, Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, Cleveland EcoVillage, and McKnight & Associates
