Cleveland police likely prevented another smash and grab early Friday morning on the west side of Cleveland.

Police said that they were alerted by a 911 caller that two vans were following each other in the area of West 50th Street and Memphis Avenue just before 5 a.m.

Officers quickly moved into the area and spotted the vans following each other. The vans took off from officers when they attempted a traffic stop at Fulton Road and Denison Avenue.

Both vans were able to get out of view from officers, but a few moments later at West 38th Street and Archwood Avenue an officer watched as they crashed into each other and three people jump out and run from the vans.

That officer was able to arrest one of the three men. Officers searched the area for the other two suspects.

Police at the scene said both vans were stolen and appeared to be ready to be used in a smash and grab of an ATM.

After about an hour, the search with officers and a police K9 was called off.

Descriptions of the two men that got away were not released.
