EDITORS NOTE: A push alert initially stated that the Cleveland Metropolitan School District teachers were going on strike. The teachers voted to authorize a strike.

The Cleveland Teachers Union has declared it will go on strike Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. over contract negotiations.

The union gave the official notice on Tuesday morning.

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District and the teachers union have been in negotiations since November 2015. A significant number of items in their contracts have  been resolved and only a few remain.

In a statement released, the union president David Quolke called the situation unfortunate.

"All throughout this process, CTU has fought for a contract that is good for kids and fair for educators and we will not take a contract back to the membership that does not meet that standard," Quolike said.

Meanwhile, CMSD said the union's decision to strike is 'unfortunate.'

"It is unfortunate, therefore, that the CTU has chosen to put its efforts toward a strike rather than working to resolve the few remaining items ... The Board remains committed to resolving any remaining issues without eroding school reforms critical to meeting the goals of the Cleveland Plan."

The district said they are making preparations to minimize the impact on the 39,000 students.
