CLEVELAND - Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald have announced a push to host one of the two 2016 Presidential nomination conventions.
The Republican and Democratic National Committees have invited Cleveland, among other cities, to submit proposals to host their conventions in 2016.
Jackson and FitzGerald will propose resolutions to their respective councils to support funding to attract one of the conventions to the city. Cuyahoga County Council will be asked to approve $2.5 million plus $2.5 million in in-kind law enforcement services.
The amount the city would be asked for was not specified.
FitzGerald asserts that the convention could bring $200 million to the local economy.
A coalition of non-profits and community leaders - Cleveland 2016 Host Committee, Inc. - has formed to prepare the bids.
