You've heard it before. Giving a pet as a gift is a bad idea.
But is it really? The Cleveland Animal Protective League says, no.
According to the APL, research done by the ASPCA showed that there was no correlation between getting an animal as a gift and an owner's attachment to the pet, even if the pet was a surprise.
“Every day of the year, people need to realize that bringing a pet into their family or someone else’s family is a commitment. We do not believe that animals should get lost in the materialization of gift-giving, but we would also hate to deny an animal a good home because we don't trust good people who want to help an animal by giving it to a loving family as a gift,” says Sharon Harvey, president and CEO of the Cleveland APL. "We’re here to save lives and make happy endings. We believe the best way to do that is to help our people make these decisions on a case-by-case basis. It’s our dream for every animal that’s ready for adoption to have a home for the holiday!"
