CLEVELAND - Dozens of people turned out to support Cleveland RTA bus driver Artis Hughes, who allegedly hit a woman on his bus who spit on him in a video that went viral.
Hughes, who is facing assault charges for allegedly punching a female passenger, turned himself over to Beachwood police.
The video, which has been seen around the world , was taken by another passenger on that bus and appears to show 25-year-old Shidea Lane pushing Hughes and spitting on him before he uppercuts her.
When asked about the support, Hughes called it "heartwarming."
The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 268 president said they plan to attend the RTA Board meeting Tuesday and Hughes's meeting on Wednesday. Hughes has been placed on leave
Lane also faces disorderly conduct charges at a hearing in November. Hughes, who has been suspended from his job, is also due in court next month.
