CLEVELAND - A busy night for Cleveland Police after 6 people were shot in 5 separate shooting incidents within a period of 8 hours early Sunday.
The first shooting happened on Saturday August 3 around 7:30pm in the 3200 block of Roanoke Avenue. The victim, 43-year-old Java Bowling III became involved in an argument with the suspect, a 40-year-old male. Bowling was attempting to take the suspect's keys in order to prevent suspect from driving while intoxicated. The suspect fought with the victim and shot him in the chest. He then fled the scene. Officers were able to obtain suspect's name from witnesses along with a possible destination. At this point the officers broadcast suspect's description, vehicle description and destination to other officers and to the police Aviation Unit who assisted via chopper. The suspect was located and arrested at 13055 Old Pleasant Valley Road in Middleburg Heights. Officers also located the weapon the suspect used in the back yard of that residence. The suspect remains in the Central Prison Unit awaiting charges.
The second shooting happened 12:09am Sunday in the 400 block of East 149th Street. Police arrrived at the scene after residents called reporting gunshots being fired in the area. Police found Robert Hall, 28, of Euclid lying on his stomach. Hall claims he was group of friends hanging outside when a drive-by shooting happened. One of the friends, 34-year-old Earnest Artis of Cleveland was also hit during the shooting. Artis told police he heard shots being fired, dived onto the porch and realized he was hit in the leg. Hall was taken Metro and Artis was taken to Hillcrest. Both victims told police they did not know who the shooter was.
The third shooting happened two hours later around 2:00am Sunday in the area of East 38th Street and Superior Avenue. The victim, 39-year-old Damimen Spearman of Elyria, and nearby witnesses told police Spearman was in the area standing near the street talking to some people who were in a vehicle. Spearman was approached by two suspects who demanded money and then shot Spearman in the right and left lower leg and upper right thigh before he could give them his money. The suspects then fled the scene. Spearman drove himself to the Fire Station at 1645 Superior for help and was then taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
The fourth shooting happened less than an hour later at East 173rd Street and Harvard Avenue around 2:38am Sunday. The victim, 39-year-old Dominique Jones of Garfield Heights, arrived at MetroHealth Medical Center with a gunshot wound and told police he was shot by an unknown male in front of Epic Club at Harvard Ave. & E173 Street. Jones told police he works security for the club, was standing at the front door when the suspect asked him a question. Jones said the suspect then swung at Jones and four other males jumped him and he was shot during the fight. The male suspects then fled the scene.
The fifth and final shooting happened about a half an hour later around 3:18am Sunday in the 12700 block of Griffing Avenue. The victim, 57-year-old Dennis Rogers, of Cleveland told police he was walking down the street on his way home when he noticed 2 males walking on the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street, but in the same direction. Rogers said the two suspects approached him with a gun and told him, "Don't be walking in my neighborhood." Rogers said he started to walk away and was shot in the back of the leg. The two males fled the scene. Rogers was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment.
