Lake Erie Preparatory School announced Monday four students taken to the hospital after becoming ill by eating food given to them by a classmate were released and are at home with their families.
Police said they believe the students ate drug-laced candy.
In a statement released Monday around 4:30 p.m., the school stated:
We are pleased to announce that all four Lake Erie Preparatory School students who were taken to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital earlier today have been released from the hospital and are at home with their parents. As we move to ensure the safety and security of our students, we are continuing the investigation and expect the results to be forthcoming soon. We thank the community for its concern and support.
The school, located at 14405 St. Clair Ave., said the students were immediately transported to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital for examination and treatment. The principal of the school, Dr. Samuel Lockhart, went to the hospital with the students. The parents were notified.
The student suspected of causing the incident was removed from the school, officials stated.
In a statement released earlier on Monday, the school said:
We will be diligent in investigating the matter fully. Our goal is assure that all students learn within an environment that is assured of being safe and secure at all times. The student who provided the food has been removed from the school premises pending the outcome of the investigation. We ask for your respect of the privacy of the families during this time. We will announce any updates to the public, as they are made available.
