CLEVELAND - Thirty people from Cuyahoga County, including an Olmsted Falls pastor, have been charged in connection with a six-month child pornography investigation.

The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s office announced Thursday the indictments of 27 adults and three juveniles as a result of “Operation Lake Effect.”

In all, 13 law enforcement agencies were involved in the investigation. Each is a partner in the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

Prosecutor Bill Mason said the operation targeted traders of child porn across the state of Ohio. Detectives used new technology to identify IP addresses of those trading and downloading illegal images and video clips.

Mason’s office released these stats about the investigation:
"From May 2010 through December 2010, 46 law enforcement officers from 17 law enforcement agencies executed 54 search warrants on homes in 22 communities throughout Cuyahoga County. Officers seized 1,821 items such as computers, CDs, cell phones, flash drives, digital cameras, and webcams. Thirty-four (34) additional cases have been referred to 23 law enforcement agencies outside of Cuyahoga County, including one in the state of Indiana."

Of those charged in Operation Lake Effect include 48-year-old Rev. Dr. Mark Griggs of Berea. Prosecutors said he was the pastor at Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Olmsted Falls. He was charged in a 112-count indictment that includes downloading, trading and possessing child pornography. The indictment alleges Griggs traded the child porn over the Internet from both his home and church on his laptop computer between July 2008 and November 2010.

The church's website lists Griggs and his wife as co-pastors of the church. His church had no comment for NewsChannel5 about the indictment on Thursday, but the marquee on the church still lists Griggs as the pastor.

“He downloaded and saved images of sexually abused children to his computer that depicted children being anally, vaginally, and digitally raped,” stated the prosecutor’s office in a news release.

In the pastor’s neighborhood in Berea on Thursday, neighbors told NewsChannel5’s Paul Kiska that they are shocked saddened and concerned since there are so many kids that live in the area.  Church officials said they are cooperating with the investigation but had no other comment.

Prosecutor Bill Mason said his office offers a free dvd called "Computer Cop" for parents.  The software will record any conversations deemed sexually inappropriate.  Mason said parents should tell their children they're installing it and let children know the dangers of inappropriate conversations and transmissions.  The dvd is free through Mason's office by calling 216-443-7800.
