Volunteers will clean up the Black River in Lorain in an effort to build better neighborhoods

LORAIN, Ohio - The Black River in Lorain is getting a good cleaning for spring. The Lorain County paddlers group LoCo Yaks is sponsoring the Black River Clean-up 2013 on May 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Volunteers will check in at the Black River Wharf off Broadway and 14th Street in Lorain and then spread out to pick up trash along the river. Some volunteers will also be in the water on kayaks and canoes with long handled scoops to get trash out of the river.

Event planner Stephanee Moore says over 100 people have registered for the event and as many as 200 could show up to lend a hand.

Three locations will be targeted for the clean-up. One starts at the Wharf, another behind the Lorain Steel Plant and a third at the Metroparks French Creek Reservation in Sheffield Village. A shuttle bus will be provided to take people to the further sites.

Event planners encourage pre-registration to ensure there are enough garbage grabbers, gloves, bags, water and snacks. You can register at brcu2013.webs.com. The trash will be brought back to the Wharf for disposal. Volunteers are not required to remain the entire time.

The event will be held rain or shine and participants are being asked to dress for the weather.

Anyone wanting to volunteer should register here: http://brcu2013.webs.com/
