LORAIN, Ohio - About 200 volunteers rolled up their sleeves Sunday near Broadway Avenue and 14th Street to clean up the Black River in downtown Lorain.
Volunteers not only walked the shores of the Black River to pick up garbage, some of them even got in kayaks, canoes or paddle boards to get trash out of the water.
"We'd take out new friends on the river and it was a little embarrassing at times, just the uncleanliness of it. So a lot of it comes from having pride," one volunteer said.
They cleared away pounds of trash Sunday.
5 On Your Side continues fighting back against a growing number of vacant homes and buildings through our Building Better Neighborhoods initiative.
You can report vacant homes by sending us pictures and information on condemned properties in your neighborhood, and we'll forward the information to your city building department in an effort to move the properties to progress.
More information on how residents can volunteer in their neighborhoods and make them better can be found by contacting Hands on Northeast Ohio.
