Walking through the Akron Haunted Schoolhouse alone

AKRON, Ohio - Over the past two years, I've been one-by-one overcoming certain fears. Walking through a haunted house alone was not one I ever thought I'd cross off the list.

I've been afraid of the dark since I was little. I can't even watch scary movies or I have nightmares for weeks. I even called 911 about the fear when I was 6, and locked my dad out of the house after I saw (likely animal) eyes in the woods one night. Those are just two examples.

By the way, I'm 29 and married and none of that has changed. I can't even walk in my own basement at night when my husband isn't home.

It's all in my head, I'm sure, but at least you get an idea of my very real dark and scary fears.

Now, each October I visit different haunted houses with a group of friends and my husband, who carries me through as I scream like a little girl and try to run away. Never have I done it by myself, or even thought about it. That changes the whole dynamic of the already frightening experience.

And somehow, every year brings me back to the Akron Haunted Schoolhouse and Laboratory -- truly the best haunted attractions in Ohio. Nothing compares. The elaborate scenes and history of the buildings have drawn me in for years.

So, when a friend of mine proposed I walk through it without my husband, without friends, no one to hold onto, no one to hide behind, I thought, yeah right. But then I realized I had to do it to shake off the grip I let these fears have on me.

Pierced with fear, I fall down, lose my cellphone, scream bloody murder, sweat, get chased by a chainsaw-wielding monster (I needed my husband for this part. Those who know me know chainsaws are not my favorite thing), and even get to scare a few visitors myself. All in less than three minutes.

Will I ever go through a haunted house by myself again? Nope. Not to mention I was exhausted after only two floors of fright. But I'm sure glad I did it once!

The Akron Schoolhouse and Laboratory have earned nationwide recognition by multiple organizations, including AOL Digital City (3rd best in the U.S), Fangoria Magazine (top 20) and HauntWorld Magazine (one of the most influential haunted attractions of all time).

And if you haven't already heard, the Schoolhouse has a first-of-its-kind experience in the world on the third floor. It's sure to leave you going back and forth until you figure out what's shaking.
