COPLEY TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Two Copley-Fairlawn High School students were among the victims killed in Sunday's shooting rampage in Copley that left eight people dead, according the district's superintendent Brian Poe.
Autumn Johnson, 16, was one of the students killed, Copley police announced during Monday's press conference. The identity of the other student is being witheld because some family members still need to be notifed, police said.
Autumn's father, Bryan Johnson, 44, along with her grandparents Russell Johnson, 67, and Gudrun Johnson, 64, were also shot and killed. A Facebook page, RIP Johnson Family, has been set up in honor of the family.
"This is a senseless tragedy and it sent shock waves through our terrific community," Poe said. "I'm very worried about the children, of course the adults (too), but our charge is our children and I'm worried about the 3,400 students we have here in the district."
To deal with the tragedy, grief counselors will be on hand Monday at the high school in the auxiliary gym from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., and from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The Johnson's friend Carrie Silket said that Autumn enjoyed riding BMX bikes, and on Tuesday BMX racers will wear yellow ribbons in honor of the family at Akron Derby Downs.
Silket has also established the the "Johnson Family Benevolent Fund," where those interested in donating to support the family can do so at any First Merit Bank.
The shooting spree started just before 11 a.m. Sunday at a house in the 2300 block of Goodenough Avenue. Copley Township is located just outside of Akron, Ohio and 40 miles south of Cleveland.
In all, police said there were four different crime scenes as a result of the shootings, and the gunman shot eight people, killing seven of them. Police then shot and killed the gunman after he shot at officers, police said.
The gunman was identified by police as 51-year-old Michael Hance.
More information about the victims and the gunman is expected to be released during a press conference at about noon on Monday. Continue checking newsnet5.com for new information.
