A student is in the custody of police after allegedly bringing a gun into an Akron high school.

According to Akron Public School administrators, a staff member at Ellet High School reported that a student had brought a gun into the building.

The school was placed on lockdown around 10:35 a.m. Wednesday as school security investigated.

Within five minutes, officers confronted the 17-year-old student and recovered the weapon.

Police said the gun was a .40-caliber, semi-automatic handgun. It was loaded, according to police captain Dan Zampelli.

The lockdown was lifted around 11:20 a.m.

The student is now in custody of Akron police. He has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and conveying a firearm into a school.

The school sent this statement to parents in relation to the incident:

APS continues to ask for your help and support in encouraging students to let us know if they ever hear any student might be involved in something that could pose a security concern at our schools.

Our thanks to the Akron Police Department for its hard work every day.  We work closely with law enforcement on procedures and plans to maintain safety in our schools for students and staff.
