Prosecutor's office asks for lighter sentence for John Wise, man convicted of killing wife at hospit

AKRON, Ohio - The Summit County Prosecutor's Office will ask a judge to sentence the man who killed his wife at Akron General Medical Center to a lesser charge.

Summit County Prosecuting Attorney Sherri Bevan Walsh said Wednesday her office will file a motion Thursday morning requesting that Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands sentence John Wise on manslaughter.

The 68-year-old Wise was found guilty of aggravated murder, murder and felonious assault, all with firearm specifications, Friday.

Wise shot his wife in the head, killing her as she was recovering at the hospital in Aug. 2012.

If sentenced on aggravated murder, Wise faces life in prison with eligibility for parole after 23 years.

Walsh said in light of the "unique facts of this case, a shorter prison sentence is just."

Wise will be sentenced Monday at noon.
