Police investigating death of retired Canton firefighter Harry Cavitt Jr., gunshot wound to head

CANTON, Ohio - Police are investigating the death of a retired Canton firefighter who was found Thursday afternoon with a gunshot wound to the head.

Canton police responded to the 300 block of Fenton Avenue about 3:40 p.m. on Sept. 5 to check on a possibly deceased 68-year-old man.

Officers located the victim, Harry H. Cavitt Jr., with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. The Stark County Coroner's Office responded and declared the victim dead at the residence.

Detectives have placed Cavitt's wife, Tamace Y. Cavitt, 49, in investigative custody and are in the process of filing an arrest warrant for murder.

Tamace was taken to Heartland Behavioral Healthcare for treatment.

Canton Fire Department released the following statement Friday:

"Harry Cavitt Jr. was a firefighter with the Canton Fire Department. He retired in 2002. Harry was a well liked and respected firefighter. He will be sincerely missed.  He always had a story to tell and would talk with everyone.  He was the first minority firefighter to retire on service pension from the Canton Fire Department.  It is a tragedy that he passed this way."
