AKRON, Ohio - Akron police were involved in a short chase on South Arlington Road around 3 a.m. that ended with an SUV crashing into a church.
According to police, they spotted a stolen Chevrolet Trailblazer driving north on South Arlington Road. When officers attempted to pull the SUV over, it took off at speeds around 80 miles per hour, police said.
The driver lost control near Stroman Avenue and South Arlington Road, drove up the front steps of Hills Temple First Born Church, and the vehicle was launched into the building.
The SUV slammed into side of the church, causing a large section of the brick wall to be torn off of the church.
Two teenagers, ages 14 and 15, escaped the wreckage and ran away.
The 15-year-old passenger was apprehended immediately. The 14-year-old driver was arrested after police found him hiding under a tarp inside a garage on Joy Avenue.
The teenagers were transported to Akron Children's Hospital with injuries that didn't appear to be life-threatening, police said.
Police the teens said the teens are charged with receiving stolen property, obstructing official business and failure to comply with police orders.
The violent crash also destroyed a fence, installed and painted a few weeks ago, at Swan Hardware which is next door to the church.
Kyle Swan spent Monday cleaning up the mess which included spilled oil and blood near the building.
"I'm a little surprised they weren't injured more. I'm actually surprised they walked away from it," Swan said.
The Trailblazer was taken in an armed robbery around 7:15 p.m. on Sunday at Princeton and West South Street. The robbery remains under investigation.
The teens are considered suspects in that robbery.
"If they are in fact involved in the robbery, this is a 14 and 15-year-old child that are out running around with a gun," said Lt. Rick Edwards with the Akron Police Department.
The 15-year-old suspect had been reported as a missing person by a guardian on November 15, police said.
