Akron firefighters rescued a person trapped for nearly an hour inside a burning Highland Square apartment building late Tuesday.

According to Akron firefighters, the fire started just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and quickly filled the apartment building at 21 South Highland Avenue with thick smoke.

An hour and 15 minutes after the first call, firefighters found a man inside his apartment unresponsive.

Firefighters rushed the person to an awaiting ambulance while an EMT rode on the side of the stretcher performing CPR. That person, according to Akron firefighters, was revived and is alive this morning at Akron General Hospital.

Two other people were treated at the scene.

A firefighter was also treated at Akron General Hospital for minor injuries.

A cat and dog were unaccounted for. No other injuries were reported.

Some of the 13 displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Firefighters have not determined the cause of the fire.
