RAVENNA, Ohio - A new trial has begun in the case of a man accused of fatally beating a Kent State University student in a 2009 street fight.
Adrian Barker, of Shaker Heights in suburban Cleveland, was a University of Akron student when accused of killing Christopher Kernich, of Fairborn near Dayton.
Barker was sentenced to 15 years to life after his first trial, but last year an Ohio appeals court reversed the felony murder, murder and felonious assault convictions.
The court ruled that a Portage County judge failed to tell jurors they could consider convictions on lesser charges.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports Barker's trial got under way Wednesday with a prosecutor arguing Barker exploded in rage that night.
An attorney for Barker argues others could have delivered the fatal blow.
