The Summit County Medical Examiner identified Tuesday the man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Akron over the weekend.

Philip Hasan, 61, died after the shooting Sunday.

Police were called to an apartment building on Florida Avenue around 3:30 p.m. by a man who said Hasan slammed his arm in a car door.

When officers arrived at the scene, they said Hasan walked toward a van parked in the lot and allegedly reached for an assault rifle. Police said they gave verbal commands for Hasan to stop, but the man pulled out the rifle anyway.

"At that point the officer had nothing else to do but to fire shots at the suspect," Lt. Rick Edwards told newsnet5.com.

A neighbor who witnessed the shooting said she believed the shooting was justified.

"The officer told him to drop his weapon three or four times," said neighbor Kathy Trimble.

No officers were injured during the altercation and the officer involved is on paid administrative leave.
